| Video resolution at boot time? |
 |
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 16:32:41 GMT |
The problem:
Video card: ATI Radeo X7200 (VGA & DVI)
Monitor: Dell 2407WFP-HC @ 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz (VGA & DVI)
KVM: Avocent SwitchViewDVI
I want to run this in DVI mode because that is what the KVM supports,
and because the display looks better that way.
If I boot with the monitor connected to the video card using the VGA
connector, it works. If I boot with the monitor connected using the
DVI connection, I get an error from the monitor telling me to switch
to 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
What determines the output resolution of the video card at boot time?
Is there any way to set this?
Thanks!

I don't believe that this is the Signal-Quality, why you are using the
DVI-Port! Signal Quality should only be of interest in a VGA-Configuration.
But who knows!?
Has you ever made a test without the KVM, also a direct (DVI)Connection
between your Card and your Monitor!?
It could also be, that your Monitor has a Problem with the initial used
Resolution and/or Refresh-Rate of your Card!
Don't supports your Monitor all Standard Resolutions, like 640x480 and so!?
Is the initial Refresh-Rate to high than can you nothing do.
A Friend of me has the same Problem since Years, but this is only a
short Moment until the OS (in his case Windows or Linux) comes into the
Game!

I mean that makes the Monitor alone! Better i'm sure that this makes you
Monitor, i found the Error-Msg of Tom's System in the Monitor-User-Guide!
I expect you gets such a nice Hardware (Monitor) generated small Window,
like the On-Screen-Menu, with the Error-Msg inside.

Sorry, not that i knows!
But the Boot-Process should correct the Situation, or is the error so
hard that your System can not boot? May be you should test another
Monitor or another Card, if this is possible.

A DVI connection should work automatically with the "native"
resolution
of the monitor - and I believe the refresh is always going to be 60Hz
with DVI.
Possible causes of above problem when trying to use DVI are all hardware
related; in this case I would suspect a bad lead or a dying graphics
card. I guess it is possible for some sort of incompatibility to exist
between graphics card and monitor due to either using some sort of
non-standard approach - but unlikely.
Do you have a DVI to VGA adapter handy? You could then test if the DVI
output on the card actually works.
Does the monitor automatically switch to whichever is the active input?
- My Dell 1707FP has to be switched manually between VGA and DVI inputs
hence the question.

Pete
