| Adding SMP support |

Hello All;
I just got my new system up and running with eCS 2.0 beta 2 and now I'd
like to add SMP support. Ist let me congratulate the eCS team, this was
the easiest install since I switched to eCS. I have an ASUS A8V
motherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200, Seagate 300G HD, 1G Dual
Channel DDR and an 256MB Sapphire Atlantis ATI 9600 Pro video card. The
motherboard has a Marvel Yukon gigabit onboard lan which works with the
'Yukon' package found on Hobbes. The ALC850 works great with the latest
Uniaud drivers.
The WinXP install was another matter.
Now I want to install SMP support. I have all the files installed in my
eCSMT download directory ready to go but I am wondering if there is any
special order that I should install them in? Note that some of the names
of the files that I downloaded from Mensys do not match the files
specified in the SMP readme file. Should I rename them to match the
readme? Note also that not all of the downloaded files show up in eCSMT.
Should I avoid a reboot until all the SMP files are installed? What
updates should I avoid installing on an eCS v2.0 b2 installed to a
Bootable JFS partition?

I would download the current eCS MT beta (2.1.9.3 k). The only reason
it is not the main eCS MT program is that I am awaiting the
www.ecomstation.com move. After installing ecsmt2193k.exe, open eCS MT,
select the drive that you want to install SMP support on (if it is not
the only drive), Select File->eCS MT Setup, and make sure that Support
SMP Updates box is checked. After exiting setup, you should find the
SMP support in the Optional Updates.
You should have only one file to download from Mensys, ps_c005.zip.

Do not install the JFS14105 update.

Hello Chuck;
I installed the SMP support in 'Optional Updates' and rebooted and got
an error about 'acpica.add' not loading, then it reports 2 processors
initialized and then the 'APCI-CA' copyright notice and it boots
normally. I went back into eCSMT and installed the top 3 updates (no JFS
updates) and after the 3rd it said there were locked files and needed a
reboot.
The 'apcica.add' error went away and now it only reports one processor
initialized. It hangs on the reboot after the uniaud drivers load. My
optical USB mouse never turns on and the USB keyboard is dead. I left it
sitting for an hour and nothing happens. I had to power off and then on
to get it to reboot. On reboot it tries to process locked files again
and then hangs at the same spot as before. How do I back out of an
update from the command line? Is it easier to just reformat and start
over again?

Hello All;
I couldn't boot to a command prompt so I had to reinstall.
When I got it up and running again, I used eCSMT to install most of the
updates. There was an update in 'Optional Updates' called 'IBM MCP/ACP
Fixpack XR0C005' that warns about updating a bootable JFS drive so I
canceled it and went straight to the 'SMP Support (XR_C005+). There was
an error reported in the installation but I think it worked anyway. I am
still getting the error for 'acpica.add' before it initializes 2
processors and then posts the 'ACPI-CA driver for eComStation v 2.06'
trademark notice. I thought that this means the driver has loaded OK?
Could the 'acpica.add' error be from a leftover statement in
'config.sys'? Do I need both the 'os2apic.psd' and the 'acpica.add'
statements? Should the 'os2apic.psd' statement be the 1st in
'config.sys'? Note that I can no longer use the soft off power feature
after SMP install.

I don't yet have all the kinks worked out of my SMP + AMD Dual-core
system, but AFAIK OS2APIC.PSD is the "official" IBM SMP enabler,
whereas
the combination of ACPI.PSD and ACPICA.ADD (at the BetaZone) are an
independent effort intended to accomplish the same result on a greater
variety of hardware and without paying mucho $$$ to IBM. I *think* that
ACPICA.ADD and OS2APIC.PSD are incompatible and that ACPICA.ADD works
only with ACPI.ADD.
BTW, the ACPI package is now up to ver. 2.10.
There is an APM package that is supposed to work with the ACPI stuff,
but reboot and power off don't work reliably on my system either.
