Folks:
Has anyone given any thought to writing a comprehensive eComStation
reference manual?
I know that we aren't a very large user community, but I would guess that
there are enough people out there who would like to have easy access to
answers about installation, configuration, network setups, compatible
devices, etc.
I'd be willing to pay for an easy to read manual. Would someone be able to
make a profit if the manual sold for $29.95 or $39.95? I'd be willing to
pay that much for something really useful.
I remember an OS/2 reference which also had a CD-ROM of useful programs and
utilities. That would be a terrific addition to the book. Software
developers and other companies might be willing to pay the author for the
rights to include a 30-day trial copy of their software.
Am I the Lone Ranger here? Is Serenity Systems already planning a more
comprehensive manual for 2.0?

-Steve Mechling

No, I think you absolutely are on the right track. I have heard that OS/2
Warp4 came with a huuuge manual with tons of things, so I think having
that as well as modern information in one manual would be golden. I do not
know many things about OS/2 and as a consequence, I end up having to
reformat to fix my mistakes very often. This would be an invaluable
addition to the OS/2 eCS community.

No, that was Warp 3. Warp 4 came with minimal documentation. There were
several excellent 3rd party manuals available though, such as "OS/2
Unleashed".

Dave:
Thanks for those sites - looks like a lot of good information.
Looks like they haven't been updated recently. 2002 is the last update for
the OS2 databook.
Since Serenity Systems has basically re-written the whole installation
manager, and big chunks of the Presentation Manager and Workplace Shell, it
still would be marketable to produce an eCS reference book.
A eCS book in English would have a pretty good sized market. However, using
the new translation programs out there, wouldn't it be possible to also have
versions in German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, etc.? The author
would expand the potential market greatly by doing that.
I hope this gets somebody thinking about this project.
