Is anyone seeing a message about "cannot delete this file" when
installing Java 1.3.1 on eCS 2.0 RC4? I'm also seeing it for the
Developer's Toolkit.
I'm also seeing a disk space error when installing most IBM Installer
apps, like the old PMView Pro or IBM Visual Age 3.0.
If you've got errors like this on RC4, let me know and I'll post a bug
report.

I expect that all of that is because you have "too much free disk
space" available. The old PMView, and IBM VA 3.0 is almost guaranteed
to be that problem. Sometimes, you can work around that problem, by
filling up the disk, so that the counters don't overflow, when the
installer queries the amount of free space.
I guess I need to query why you want JAVA 1.3.1? I canned that, about
4 years ago, and never regretted it, for a moment. Innotek JAVA (now
1.4.2_09) works for everything that I have tried (which I will admit
isn't a lot). I did have it installed, for a while, under eCS 1.2R,
just to figure out how to get a version of JAVA to install to a
bootAble CD (that works, but it is completely useless).

I have had that same problem too. What Doug says has helped me out this
same spot. When I'm on a "serious" install, I would create a Boot
Partition of 1.5Gib, which is enough for eCs (which only seems to take
up 595MiB) + other "hanger-oners" that may require the Boot Partition,
then an extra Partition say 2.1GiB in size for my Venerable Apps :-)
Into that, I would put all my Sundial Stuff, DeScribe, Lotus Ssuite,
PMView 2000 and anything else that may be worried about "too much free
Disk Space" The balance of the Disk (that is assigned to eCs) I would
create a partiton and call it "DATA" and place the newer apps like
OPen
Office for eCs there, along with any stuff I've created.
Having said that, I have just done a "experimental" install on the
lappie (IBM R40 - 25GiB HDD of which 15GiB is for eCs and BM)of the new
RC4. After the install was finished, which included getting Genmac and
WLAn going, and playing with APIC, the first thing I did was to install
in the following order: DBExpert, DeScribe*, SSuite, Mesa, Clearlook,
PMview Pro, THEN OO. Do that in reverse, and sometimes your above
problem turns up. Ah! with DeScribe*, when installing, the Disk Space
Indicator goes into ASCII writing. I install it into
x:\programs\DeScribe. I get the usual "Insufficinet disk space [same
message, different wording]" warning come up...I just ignore it, and
DeScribe installs (and works) without a hitch.
Maybe this second method will work for you as well.

You need Java 1.3.1 for PolarBar Mailer, don't you? Is there a way of
enabling PolarBar to work under our latest Java?
Hope that helps.

Polarbar works best with Java 1.3.1, but it works with all OS/2 java.
These command lines work from the polarbar directory. Java 1.1 has a
timezone bug, due to changed rules for daylight saving time.
n:\p\java142\jre\bin\javaw.exe -cp .;polarbar.zip org.polarbar.mailer
n:\p\java141\jre\bin\javaw.exe -cp .;polarbar.zip org.polarbar.mailer
n:\java131\jre\bin\javaw.exe -cp .;polarbar.zip org.polarbar.mailer
n:\java11\bin\java -classpath .;polarbar.zip;n:\java11\lib\classes.zip
org.polarbar.mailer
and all of these installations (IBMCPP, Java 1.3.1) worked before in
RC3. I believe disk space could be the problem, but why now and not
before?
