| Migration from eCs20rc4 to eCs20GA |

Hi!
I plan to take a fling at ecs20rc4 this weekend - after the FULL backup
which will run at 0700 this morning - installing it a compatibility
partition with the HPFS file system. Suppose now that I find rc4 to be
reasonable stable and reliable so that I will install my most needed
applications on ecs20rc4 and the installed apps works well.
Now sometime in the future eCs 2.0 GA will be released and I plan to buy
it and install it. Can I so to speak "migrate" my eCs20rc4 to eCs20 GA
so that the installed apps will run correctly or must I wipe ecs20rc4,
install 2.0 GA and reinstall the applications instead?

I dont know from RC4 to GA, but I know that between the RCs and the Betas
you can not migrate. Personally, I would not migrate install but would
prefer to install clean for the GA. If the GA is what you are going to
stick with for a while, it would be better to be sure its 100% clean and
ready for the long haul, no?

From what I've read, migration is an iffy prospect at best.
I have beta 4, RC1 and RC2 installed on three 2GB partitions, . All my
installed apps and data are on other partitions. Thus when I install
RC4, hopefully this weekend, I won't have to re-install very many, if
any, apps - only the desktop references. These can all be done in an
hour or two. This is the safest route and provides opportunity to
change/improve the setups.

Use separate volumes for system and applications eg:-
c: - install system
d:\programs - install apps here
Then it is possible to update the system volume c: without to much
disruption to the installed applications - you may also want to consider
keeping data on the d: drive ie put HOME on d:
It is even possible to use some tools, eg Object Packager from Object
Desktop V2+, to backup the Desktop on c: before installing an updated
system. It is then possible to restore required application objects to
the new system Desktop (have to install Object Desktop 1st) avoiding a
lot of time consuming reinstalls.
Not having tried any of the eCS2.0RC releases I have no idea if the
Migration option still exists and, if it does, no idea if it has
improved since 1.2 release. I seem to recall that worked OK for some
people but not for others...

Instead of HPFS, you might want to install the GA on a JFS partition. They
reported good improvements in performance over HPFS.
