| RC4 install experiance ACPI failure work around |

Hi
I finally got around to installing RC4. I had my usual experience with
ACPI on my Dell Optiplex GX620. It failed to boot. Without ACPI the
install was uneventful (1st CD was bad). Then I decided to try and get
ACPI working. It had stopped on the boot following installation using
the wizard at a line saying it was initializing devices/events and
objects so I used the /SAP:0x6f to enable ACPI but not initialize
anything. It work both /PIC and /APIC (high irqs are working). Then I
determined that the actual problem was Device initialization /SAP:0x20
which still booted fine. This setting worked but I experienced very slow
video performance under SNAP (ATI Radeon X600 Series). I experimented
further and found that the video problem was fixed if memory and event
initialization was disabled (/SAP:0x25). I am posting this as a possible
fix for others experiencing slow video with ACPI and SNAP, perhaps
/SAP:0x05 would work to fix this on other systems. (Note I am using the
ACPI.psd from 2-28-08 I didn't try the one in RC4 so it might also work.
I am using the 104a SMP Kernal; hyper treading is working (single CPU))
I still have a couple of complaints about the install. The most
significant is the failure to provide amouse as an option (perhaps as
the default) for the CD boot. My mouse fails to track appropriately
using the IBM drivers and while I am fine using the keyboard it would be
a very negative experience for a new user. My other complaint is the
clutter in config.sys that is caused by failing to customize the drivers
etc for the system being installed. My machine has no HPFS partitions
but HPFS.ifs is still installed and I don't install DOS/Win but the
virtual drivers and the DOS config stuff is still placed in config.sys.
One comment on the ecom virtual drive front end, it is easy to use but
does produce one oddity. I decided to map all the drives on a remote
machine at once. I was surprised by the fact that it also mapped the
printers as drives. It would be nice if it could determine the
difference and only map the drives.Yes I could do them one at a time.
One other note the virtual drive seems slower (scanning) than the newest
netdrives SMB combination.
All in all I would rate RC4 as very good. The install went very smoothly
and the system appears to run fine in limited testing. Many Thanks to
the ecom team.

Dell -> pay attention to /FS + SMP kernel
read ACPI docs

Yes, I read your thread. Great that you've got that one running! (I
had also success with a TP R61i, excepting the audio driver. Paul's
new versions didn't work so far.)

Fixed. See: http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=1971 (Link works
after you login on www.ecomstation.com)

I would file a bug. IIRC something like that doesn't exist there as
yet.

That's already reported: http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=1734

Please contact Alex Taylor and/or file a bug.
