Thinkpad T40 Wlan problem with eCS2.0rc3

Thinkpad T40 Wlan problem with eCS2.0rc3
Wed, 14 Nov 2007 08:10:47 -060
Hello all:

I installed eCS2.0rc3 on my thinkpad T40, which has an Intel mini-card
2100 built in. Everything worked very well, except wireless connections.
After installation, during boot, a green flashing message appears "No
valid hardware info in Protocol.ini for ('WRND32$ ')" and the the icon,
which I added to e-center (or what it is called) says "No WLan driver
installed". However, I do remember clearly that during installation, at
the end of the hardware detection phase, I had confirmed my option of
wireless service with the Intel 2100. What am I missing? The
installation is of the multi-boot type and everything, including Wlan,
works under Windows (which I avoid as much as I can).

I had the same problem with RC3 and my Intel 2200BG. Do you have a
copy of the protocol.ini from a previous release installed on this
T40? The RC3 install finds the wireless and installs the GenMac
driver, but it doesn't completely update the protocol.ini.

Interesting, Mark! Unfortunately, the T40 was never used with eCS (I did
not own the T40, or not use it until recently). So the elegant solution
you propose does not work for me at this point. Installation of
eCS2.0rc3 on another thinkpad (A31p with high-rate PC card) worked like
a charm so that I was really caught unprepared for the T40 failure.

In the meantime, I must have done something stupid. I downloaded the
Genmac200 + Intel drivers and installed them on a maintenance partition
(G:) of the T40. After using MPTN and rebooting, the T40 trapped and
refused all co-operation in booting to G:. What is worse, now my
principal, working eCS partition (D:) lost its desktop and is severely
mutilated in the process, for an unknown reason. Now I am reinstalling
D: and G: with eCS2.0rc3 and hope for suggestions by the experts of what
to do with the T40 wireless connections. (Going back to eCS2.0rc2 for
the T40 showed the same problem as eCS2.0rc3.) What should I do?

Lothar,

As I recall I had the same problem with RC2 as well. I think that was
why I remembered to just copy the lines from an older protocol.ini. I
can post the lines here, but its for the Intel 2200bg so its probably
different from what you need. I use to have a 2100b in this T42p, but
I can't find a backup old enough to show that.

[W8086X4220_nif]

   DriverName = WRND32$
   VENDOR = 0x8086
   DEVICE = 0x4220
   NDIS_SYS = "W29N50A.SYS"
   NDIS_INF = "W29N50A.INF"
   SSID = "WLAN"
   DEBUGLEVEL = "NONE"
   OPTIONS = "NOTIME

Have you tried running MPTS and removing the 2100b driver, rebooting,
then running MPTS and then reinstalling the 2100b driver? Maybe that
would fix the protocol.ini.

Mark
