I outgoing frm an empty harddisk
1. boot from eCS installation disk
2. when the installer is up and running: hit Shift + F3
this brings up an ordinary commanline window
3. s:> LVM
hit Enter: create IBM bootmanager
hit F5 to switch to physical view
this step is needed to get each and any partiton created
You'll have to create the partitons in this order:
Partiton
type Size comment
Primary any Windows boot
Primary 1023 will be linux /boot
extended any Windows data/programs (optional)
repeat until you have any partition
windows should use
extended 2028 eCS system (recommended for eCS 2.0)
extended any eCS data/progs
repeat until all eCS partitons are created
extended 20GB reserved for Linux /
you can spend a bit less or much more
depending on the room you likes to spend
room for using linux
extended 2xRAM reserved for linux /swap
Note the name and size you've spend for the partitons. You'll need
that for the next step
press F5 to switch to logical view
Preserve the following comment in mind:
When creating LVM type volumes you should press F& every time you have
finished creating of a volume because LVM will concatenate multiple
partitions to a single volume until you tells it that a volujme
contains all partitons it should.
Create volumes from existent partition:
Partiton volume type drive Comment
letter
Windows Boot compatible, bootable C: required by Win.
.
/boot compatible, bootable x: GRUB ends here
this assigns the volume
to BM; hide from eCS
thereafter allowed!
Win Data compatible, not b. D: 1. extended
avoids convision of win.
only needed when access
from eCS is needed
eCS System compatible, boot* ?:
eCS data LVM, not boot. ?:
/ compatible, not boot y: possible LVM not boot
only needed when you
will try to access it
from eCS
* starting with eCS 2.0 you may use 'LVM, bootable' instead to create
an bootable LVM volume instead.
?: feel free to assign any drive letter from the list of drive letters
available. LVM allows you to assign drive letters in any order you
likes.
Press F3 to end LVM, quit 'WITH save' to get the configuration written
to disk. End 'without save' will never change a single bit on disk! so
any work will lost.
S:> format <systemdrive>: /FS:HPFS /L
beginning with eCS 2.0 you can use
S:> format <systemdrive>: /FS:JFS /L
but only when you have created that volume with volume type LVM,
bootable
You may now format the other eCS partitons too. The option /L is
recommended. Because in case of a real hard crash the chance of
a recover from crash is significantly higher when the partiton is
long formatted as without /L. Missing /L here may result in loosing
any data on a volume because chkdsk may not be able to reconstruct
the LVM bookkeeping then.
Formatting a big volume can cost a lot of hours! So initiate
it immediately before you goes at home or in bed is a good idea.
You may now continue installing eCS until the systems tells you that
the installation is complete.
4. Boot from windows installation CD
be sure NOT to automatic install! as this will destroy any any
partitoning you'll done.
be sure to select the partiton you've partitoned for windows!
5. After windows installation is done you'll insert the linux boot CD
Follow the expert installation way! You'll have to set the partiton
types
for the linux partitons manually!
Be sure to set the partiton you've reserved for /boot as location
for GRUB.
When done right, linux will install GRUB and the kernel there and
left the
boot sector untouched! So BM will show you your linux as one of the
systems
it should boot. BM will then boot GRUB and GRUB will boot linux.
After linux install is finished:
Boot from eCS CD, fire up LVM from it as described above and activate
BM again.
Be sure to end LVM "with save". Now, every time you boots up the
mashine you can select which OS should get booted.
You may or may not install another eCS beside the one as maintenence
system. In that case you have to be carefully never to touch os2*.ini
from the other system because this will destroy the inis!
