eCs 2.o rc4 and what's not working for me

eCs 2.o rc4 and what's not working for me
Mon, 14 Apr 2008 20:31:16 +020
Hi there,

After a day of trying I have finally installed eCs2.0rc4 on my asus A8N-E.

One or two things don't work:

SMP makes either the system crash, or gives a processor load of 99,9% on
the first and 42.9% on the second. Seems I can't reproduce this anymore
because now the system only crashes in different modules when SMP is
enabled. For now I don't use SMP.

Odin can't locate the symbolic file. I know from the past I had to copy
the os2krnlr.sym from \Os2\Pdpsi\Pmdf\Warp45 to the root of the system
partition. This does not solve the problem.
There are a few apps I like to use which require Odin to be installed
and operational. ( Filezilla and Dmsn ). It seems Odin has not been
updated for a long time, is this project dead or can we aspect a working
version for eCs2.0?

I did manage to install Eschemes 1.47 with sunny icons, pianolaunchpad
and imagion. Also have Popa but did not install this yet because I need
to figure out first if this is something I can use on a regular pc.

I also updated the acpi drivers but did not try to enable SMP.

Actually I am quite happy, okee it took a day to discover that SMP was
the source of most trouble but with this disabled the system works.

Video is not quite okay, I have installed SNAP ( have a registered
version ) while during installation I installed standard vga, but I
can't set a refreshrate. The chip set is recognized correctly. Could be
because my monitor ( Samsung Syncmaster 206BW ) is not supported / listed.

The following I did ( short and working version )

Install eCs2.0rc4
  -Standard VGA
  -No com or vcom
  -Selected most options
-Changed default location of apps to another partition
-No firewall ( have injoy )
  -No 4Os2
  -No PSI
-No bonus apps ( have RsjCdr / Scanner is not supported )
  -Nforce4 NIC
-No dial-in software ( direct cable connection )
  -Using DHCP

After completion
  -changed user name
  -Changed network settings
  -Installed printers

After reboot
  -Installed Nforce4 drivers
  -Change NIC to Nforce4
  -Installed SNAP
  -Installed eSchemes deluxe
  -Updated ACPI/APM
  -Deinstallation of Eworkplace
  -Installation of Xworkplace

Total times installed today : 8
Total times before seeing the light : 7 ( SMP causes system to crash )
Total time spent installing and reinstalling : 6 hours

I've had SMP working fairly happily on an A8N-E fitted with dualcore cpu
here.

Digging around this looks like the line I was using in the config.sys
file - you may need /!NOD on the end for acpi later than v2.22

PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /TMR /APIC /R /CD

Might be an idea to have a read of the acpi docs and do some
experimenting if the above does not help :-)

Standard VGA = 60Hz refresh rate; there is no option.

I think it is because you selected standard vga. If the graphics chipset
is supported use the SNAP accelerated driver if not use VESA (VBE
fallback, use gaoption to set that) or the Panorama driver.

Is there a "Windows driver" (an INF file) for the monitor? If
"Yes" you
can import that into SNAP.

Pete

This evening I will give it a try. Did not have the energy left to
continue trying to get it to work.

That's alway's a good starting point, sometimes it's quicker to shoot a
message :-)

That's through. I installed SNAP later and SNAP sees it's a Samsung
Syncmaster only the type I have is not listed. 60MHz should be enough.
The monitor can support 75MHz but even wxp does not usse this.

Okay, keeps me busy again figuring out how to do that :-)

Thanks for the tips. Acpi I will try this evening, have to go to work
now. The inf I will look into later.

Okay, did give it a try, no success. The last driver loaded is the
networkcard and than it stops with no activity, even alt-ctrl-del does
not work anymore.

Did not go into this yet.

That sounds like the /!NOD switch is missing from the above line?

Which version of acpi are you using - the 3.08 version (available in the
betazone) should boot with this line:-

PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /TMR /APIC /R /CD /!NOD

The works here for the A8N-E - without the /!NOD bit the system does not
boot.

If the above does not help:

Which nic driver are you using? - the choice is genmac or nveth.

You could try swapping to whichever you are not currently using to see
if that helps.

I have also found it necessary to use the following config.sys line with
my M2N mainboard:-

EARLYMEMINIT=TRUE

I can usually boot the M2N system without the above line but the audio
drivers seem to overwrite the nveth nic driver if I do - I get audio but
no network connections at all.
