| Can't print from 1.2R |
 |
Sat, 26 Apr 2008 15:19:48 +010 |
I've had ecs 1.2R installed on a laptop for some time now but have only
just found out that printing does not work. I have a printer installed
and it all looks ok, but on printing a job, the job just disappears and
does not print. It is not a hardware problem in that running XP on this
dual boot machine gives correct printing (parallel port in both cases).
I believe I have covered angles such as is the driver using the right
port (LPT1).
Any suggestions anyone?

What printer, which driver and build of driver are involved?
If you have previously installed and/or uninstalled printers/drivers you
may want to have a look at what prndrv.exe lists about printers, drivers
and queues as they may not be what you expect. A mismatch on what you
expect can cause print jobs to disappear into the ether.
The app, prndrv.exe, was an accessory to PMFaxworks - if I remember
correctly - and I am not sure where to get a copy from these days...
Aha! Found a copy here http://www.os2site.com/sw/comm/faxworks/prndrv.exe

For what its worth, Parallel port printing works fine to my Epson
Photo Stylus 720 using eCS 1.2R. Its USB printing that I can't seem to
get working. The USB printer is detected and printer make/model (and
printer ROM Level) is correctly identified, but output goes into a big
hole somewhere. That may be because I have to use the Stylus 700
driver..........;-(

I used prndrv.exe to look at the printer setup on the laptop and it
looked ok and was basically similar to the setup from my desktop (where
the latter has additional printers installed). So that didn't seem to
help as such, although it was interesting to have a handy way of seeing
the information.
I then noticed that the driver version in use on the laptop was earlier
than the installation default version. (30.800 versus 30.827). I suspect
this happened as a result of copying files from the desktop when
fiddling with pin.exe to install a recent printer.
Reverting to the more correct later driver, re-installing the port
driver and selecting a similar but not correct printer (not available in
the installation list), I tried again. Still no output to the printer on
the parallel port and, what was worse, java.exe was now crashing in
pscript.drv.
Noting that the printer had a usb port, I decided to try that route. I
wasn't particularly watching what happened, but plugging in the usb
cable seemed to cause a new printer object to appear with the correct
port already selected. And best of all, printing functioned correctly to
USB.
Now I just have to use pin.exe to get the correct printer specified in
the driver again, but I don't anticipate any problems with that.
So, a conjecture based on my experience would be that parallel port
printing doesn't work in 1.2R, but usb printing does.

Hi Peter
Just noticed there are a few of us involved... :-)

If we are discussing pscript.drv build 30.827 I found that to be a
non-worker for the printers that I tried it with; buildlevel 30.822
worked fine for those printers.
I managed to get 30.822 by login at ecomstation and search for pscript
driver which only reported 30.827 available. I used the ftp details
provided for download via ftp to access the directory where 30.827
resides and found the 30.822 version.

Try 30.822...

Sounds like something auto-configured successfully :-)
Which leaves us all wondering what is wrong with the LPT configuration?

I've had output to both LPT and USB ports in the past on my 1.2R system
so the above does not sound correct to me.
I suggest retesting when you have fiddled with pin.exe to add the driver
you want to use by creating a new printer with LPT1 selected as output.
