| RC4 crashes in DOSCALL1.DLL |
 |
Tue, 29 Apr 2008 06:22:59 GMT |
Since I moved over to my new laptop (with a fresh install of eCS 2.0rc4),
I've found several programs that seem to be rather more unstable than they
were on my previous box (which was rc1). The odd thing is that most of
these programs were xcopy'd directly from the old box, where they worked
OK, so it must presumably be something about the new system causing the
problem.
The main ones are:
- MPlayer sometimes crashes playing movie files
- SeaMonkey periodically hangs and then crashes, when exiting.
Anyway, I was glancing through POPUPLOG.OS2 to see if there might be any
hints there, and I noticed something rather striking.

Hmm, getting a definite sense of déja vu here. Why would all of these
disparate programs be crashing in DOSCALL1.DLL with such a strikingly
similar stack trace? Has something been done to DOSCALL1.DLL in rc4?
My rc4 system is configured almost exactly the same way as my rc1 system
was. The only significant difference I can think of is that on rc4 I am now
using APM (whereas I used ACPI on the laptop with rc1).

Looking at the below log entries I am wondering if you have the wrong
doscall1.dll file for the kernel involved ie if using SMP there is a
different version of doscalls1.dll used to when using a UNI kernel - and
vice versa.
This is the version I have installed in \os2\dll with the SMP kernel
installed:-
2-08-05 3:47p 144,631 0 a--- DOSCALL1.DLL
There is a UNI version in \os2\install\uni:-
14-02-07 8:31p 192,100 0 a--- DOSCALL1.DLL
Just a thought.

The common element here is libc06x. Sometimes these recover after a load
of crashes as above. In general, though, once the library's runtime is
damaged, rebooting is the only option.
How this relates to RC4 I have no clue.

If running the SMP kernel I suggest that you try the other doscall1.dll
file and see if there is any improvement.
James makes the point that the libc06* files could be involved. You may
want to double check what libc06*.dll files you have installed. After a
new, clean install I have
[L:\ecs\dll]dir libc06*.dll
The volume label in drive L is ECS20RC4.
The Volume Serial Number is 66A7:D5BC.
Directory of L:\ecs\dll
11-06-07 10:53p 48,142 0 a--- libc06.dll
11-06-07 10:53p 48,142 0 a--- libc061.dll
11-06-07 10:53p 157,124 0 a--- libc062.dll
11-06-07 10:53p 1,349,060 0 a--- libc063.dll
You have edited the config.sys file and deleted all double entries in
the Path and LibPath? - not sure that would cause a problem but ...
