Win2K Pro crash after updates

Win2K Pro crash after updates
Wed, 19 Sep 2007 16:35:12 GMT
I have recently installed VPC 5.1 on my eCS 2.0 RC2 system for testing. I
have installed Windows 2000 Pro and then SP4 from CD and things worked
fine except for a message about a duplicate name whenever I booted the
system. I then tried to use the update feature to apply Microsoft's
patches to the system. The feature reported 57 security patches should be
downloaded and applied. I did so and it reported they were successfully
downloaded and installed. When I restarted the system I ran into a
problem.

The system gets to the point of "applying security policy" and then
restarts. I let this happen 3 times to see if it would clear itself and
then I booted to safe mode. In safe mode the event log shows three
crashes with minidumps taken. Does anyone have the tools to read the
minidumps and tell me where the problem is? You can download them here:

http://members.verizon.net/~ariesgrp/mini091907.zip

I would like to take whatever corrective action is required in safe mode
to get the system booting again. The only alternative I see to this is to
trash the disk image and start over. Any help is appreciated in advance.

I don't have XP, so I will have to continue working with Win2K. I guess I
can check with M$ about the dumps, but I was hoping someone here had the
tools and would be able to tell me where the problem was. I could then
hopefully back out the problem update or fix whatever it is the update
doesn't like.

You could try MS for the minidump files. They should have the proper
tools to read the content of the file.

About the duplicate name: Make sure there are no spaces underlines etc
in the name. Best is just plane text like: windows2k or vpc01w2k or
something like that. As far as I understand it VPC has a problem with
lines and spaces in the name.

Another thing I do is make a backup first of the basic installation.
This is easy just copy the directory to another location on your
harddisk. When you ran into problems it is easy to go back ( copy the
backup to it's original location ).

Maybe it is better if you don't apply all hotfixes at one time? You
could try to split the updates in 6 portions. In between each, after a
successful update and reboot make another backup. Yes this will cost you
some diskspace but after you have finished and all is working you can
delete them again.
When the update and reboot are not successful you know that one of the
updates causes a problem. It is easier to find out which one when there
are not so many updates applied.
Finally apply only those updates that are really necessary for your
situation. pe: If you never use mediaplayer in vpc there is no need to
update this. Better to deinstall mediaplayer :-)

The problem is the NTOSKRNL and associated kernel files. These are updated by
several Windoze updates but if you are careful you can exclude any updates
which touch them. Or at least you used to be able to...
The big problem is the Update Rollup that packages multiple fixes together,
as it is very difficult to apply the constiuent parts separately these
days.
There used to be a thread that documented which the problem packages were
on the Innotek message board, but that got lost when they closed it down.

I would guess your best bet is to apply all the fixes then manually overwrite
the kernel files with an old ones (from safe mode).
You will also need to overwrite the copies that Windoze keeps as backups,
otherwise your replacements will get re-replaced. Ain't it a nightmare?

What hazards having these backlevel files gives you is anybody's guess, but

I never was able to keep w2k running (ie with critical security updates)
on VPC 5.1 foor OS/2 with the OS/2 additions installed. They work
however with the OEM Win XP delivered with the computer I use.

If you have installed them, try to to deinstall them in safe mode (F8).
