I am having a hard time getting Gnome to setup to the 1280x600 resolution.
SaX2 says that it supports this resolution, but the screen resolution
utility won't allow me to go any higher than 1024x768. I have a wide
screen laptop that I am using. I have gone to other places to find out
some answers, but no one seems to be able to help me so far. I am still
kind of new to Linux. I know a few basic things, so if you can help with
as much detail as possible that would be great.

I had a similar problem when I first installed openSUSE 10.2. Even
though my widescreen monitor and graphics card supported 1920x1200,
options for the screen resolution settings were limited to 1280 x 1056
(or something like that). What fixed it for me was some video driver
updates I made while implementing the recommendations in the article
"Hacking openSUSE 10.2". You can read it at:

Maybe it will work for you as well.
Good luck!
