| Cannot Install Skype RPM |

Fri, 14 Mar 2008 22:56:02 GMT |
m I have downloaded the Skype rpm package for OpenSUSE from Skype.com
I saved it to /home/geoff
then double clicked on the package and extracted the files to the same
dir I then ran the following
rpm -i skype-2.0.0.63-suse.i586. rpm
error: open of skype-2.0.0.63-suse.i586. failed: No such file or
directory
and as you can see I got a failed message.
Can some one please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Hi
Double clicked and extracted?? You just need to run the command on the
rpm file you downloaded as root user. Or right click and then select
install software.

Hi
You just need to run the command on the
rpm file you downloaded as root user (what does this mean? I am loged
in as me! and no other log in available?) (What command do you refer
to?)
Or right click and then select
install software. (this does not work!)
Please give detailed instructions I am new to all this stuff

Hi
You need to be super user 'root', the one you created just a password
for during the install. See example below, I always use the U switch
rather than i.
malcolml@oscar-sled:~$ su -
Password:
oscar-sled:~ # rpm -Uhv /home/username/name_of_the_rpm
As long as there are no dependency issues it should install once the
rpm is installed run SuSEconfig
oscar-sled:~ # SuSEconfig
<output from susconfig>
oscar-sled:~ # exit
logout
malcolml@oscar-sled:~$

Apart from what Malcolm said, you should be able to right click an RPM and
select "Open with install software". You'll be prompted for the root
password, then Yast will keep flashung pop-ups for a while.
