| swap grub for Vista boot loader |
 |
Tue, 25 Mar 2008 09:56:04 GMT |
LS,
installed openSUSE ( on L:\ ext3 ) after I installed Vista Ultimate (
C:\ NTFS ).
When I boot, I got the openSUSE GRUB, and can choose Windows ( and had
set it to default with boot loader under openSUSE ).
No problems there !
Then I tried to restore the Vista boot loader, to give me the choice
between Vista and openSUSE first, and then then the various options per
OS.
Grub still starts...
OpenSUSE boots fine !
Vista can't find the winload.exe anymore ( and won't boot ).
No probs, I thought, this can be repaired via the repair menu on the
bootable install DVD.
But it can't find any of my partitions anymore, and thus can't repair
winload.
I would either need to reload a HDD driver, or restore Vista boot
loader.
How can I restore Vista boot loader from openSUSE, so I can repair
Vista ?
I do have internet and USB in opeSUSE.
I have made back-ups on Saturday, so no biggie should I need to format;
but it will take me several hours to tweak etc...
btw: Love openSUSE and would love to keep it, and do away with Vista
all together, but need to keep Vista to run several appz...
Thanx,
lucas.

Hello,
To change it back you can try loading up the Windows CD
once you hit the first screen press recovery modus.
You should get a console screen from windows there.
try the commands:
FIXBOOT
and
FIXMBR
if i am correct that should restore the 8 mb boot partition.

LS,
I have had a simular problem before, and solved it via the fixboot
command.
This time round, when I boot Vista via the system recovery option, it
does NOT show Vista as an OS ( an no partitions etc ).
I click next ( not loading drivers ), and select the command prompt
window ( it can't fix winload.exe automatically, since it can't find my
HDD ).
I type bootrec.exe /fixboot and / fixmbr in c:\.
/fixmbr states: operation completed succesfuly.
/fixboot states: the volume does not contain a recognized file sytem.
Pls make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that
the volume is not corrupt.
The volume is not corrupt, since I can access it via openSUSE ( which
still boots like a charm ! ).
I need to restore the Vista boot loader from openSUSE...
Once it runs, it will find my Vista partition, and the boot dvd will
repair all...
I will then use the Vista boot loader to choose between the core OS's,
and then use GRUP ( when openSUSE is selected ), to choose options for
openSUSE ).
Or F8 for Vista options...
Thanx for the help !
lucas.

this should be nice, if ever you can manage the boot vista database
from opensuse!
I had the same problem, but could fix it with one of the option of the
vista (see http://en.opensuse.org/Windows_problems)
the problem is very hard, because most laptop are *not* sold with the
vista dvd, but with a recovery system that clear the HDD
I had to use emule to find a vista dvd (standard, not even cracked, I
have the licence) and use it.
What can work finally (It works with XP, not tried with vista) is to
install a new windows version next to the old one (same disk,
different folder) - this usually fixes the boot, then you can add a
line one the boot ini (XP) or use the vista boot manager to boot the
old install, if you are lucky, vista wil itself find the old install
and fix it
jdd
NB: if ever you find a working solution, please add it to the wiki
page, many people have the same problem

LS,
have tried to fix via the Vista boot DVD, but no luck...
Still can't find the disc...
Will try to install a "ghost" ( 2nd ) install of Vista, and see if it
will fix the boot problem, and is I can repair the original version
thus.
I'll post the result !
Should it work, I should be able to delete the ghost version of Vista,
and all should be well...
More later,and thanx,
lucas.
