| No GUI after attempted 3D desktop (Xgl) |

Hello all,
Today I tried to activate the 3D desktop in my OpenSuse 10.3 KDE
installation. It turned out to be a pact with the devil. I have an
nVidia 6600 TurboCache graphical card. I downloaded the compiz package
and nvidia drivers (as mentioned in an online guide, which I had opened
in my Linux desktop I can't find now). Previously I had the nv driver
installed. Anyway, installing the drivers gave some errors, which I
ignored. (systeminfo then showed that the graphical driver was
'unknown', instead of 'nv'.)
I then set the XSERVER in DISPLAYMANAGER to Xgl (it was on nvidia
something I think, not on Xorg). Rebooting did't give the expected
result as I ended up in a command screen instead of the KDE interface.
So I found the XSERVER again in YAST (from the command) and changed Xgl
to Xorg (the 3rd option wasn't there). This didn't work.
So then I ran the following set of command:
init 3
rpm -qa
rpm -e (nothing here)
sax2 -a
gconftool-2 -- recursive - unset /apps/compiz
rm -rf /home/<my user name>/.config/compiz
init 5
restart x (failed, produced an error)
My guess is that the nVidia driver is shot, and I need to reset it to
nv, preferably (that one worked, except for 3D). However, I'm not
exactly an expert. I would greatly appreciate any help, since I have no
idea how to get the normal OS GUI back. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. I tried but it doesn't work. It tries to start
an xserver (I think), but fails.
E.g.: "FATAL:module nvidia not found"
and "screens found, but none have a usable configuration"
Could I have accidently deleted the nv driver?

Hi
I wouldn't think so, search for nv.ko if it's gone try vesa to get you
started.
Have a look here to install the nvidia driver;
http://en.opensuse.org/Nvidia
and
http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#5
and
http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl

Try
sax2 -r -m 0=nv
Note, this is a zero not a capital "o".
If you aren't tired of playing with 3D effects yet, you could also try a
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
to see if you *can* get a working config with the NVidia driver.
