| How to install non-rpm driver? |

I have the misfortune to own an inexpensive HP-4370 scanner. I say
misfortune because up to now the only drivers I can find have a pink cast
to the scanned images. I'm currently using the hp-3900-sane backend driver.
There is a newer version of the driver (0.12) but it's only available in
tarball form.
I've been looking everywhere for a straight forward complete guide to
installing a non-rpm driver or program to OpenSuse 10.3. I can find all
sorts of guides that refer to other distros, or refer to specific programs
which don't help very much or others that assume I already know how to do
this.
Can anyone direct me to how I actually do such an install. I've started by
making sure I have gcc, make, and the kernel modules all use the same
version.
Thanks, Bob.

Robert Smits,
Basically a tar ball is something you need to compile and install
yourself. The exact install differs but is detailed in the readme's in
the the tar ball.
In general these are the steps that are needed;
./configure
make
make install
