| Unable to Come Up in Run Level 5 |

I'm running SUSE 10.3 under VMware Workstation 6.3. Yesterday, all was
fine and then my Vista system crashed. When I went to restart SUSE, it
repeats a failure message:
"The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90
seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2
minutes before trying again on display :0."
As the system tries to come up, the warning (gdm) also says:
"gtk-warning: cannot open display:"
"WARNING: failsafe dialog failed (inhibitions: 0 1)"
Following this, I booted up in safe mode (RL3) and logged in as root.
I then ran sax2 (which couldn't read the stored configuration) and
reconfigured video and monitor.
As the system boots up, I was able to log in as root; however, the
system continues to try and bring up the display server. I did a
reboot followed by normal startup. Same problem.
After rebooting (shutdown -r), I went to the /var/log/gdm directory and
viewed the :0.log file: "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server
aborting"
Signal 11 is a segmentation fault. What it has to do with gdm is
unknown to me.
Does anyone have ideas on how to resolve this?
Thanks,
Nick.

don't you have a recent snapshot?
The virtual drive is a file in windows, if win crashes when writing
the file, the file is corrupted...
may be try some sort of fsck...

That partially worked!
I ran fsck and it did come up in RL5 but the resolution was wacked so I
ran sax2 to correct it and rebooted. When it came up - same problem.
So I logged in a root and, again, ran fsck (clean) but, nope, back to
square 1. :-(

Try running 'sax2 -r' to clear the X configuration and rebuild.
