| OpenSUSE 10.3 Gnome "Disappearing Functions" |
 |

Hi all,
This weekend my OpenSUSE 10.3 on my laptop has started doing some very
odd things!!!!
First thing was the blue bar at the top of every window (title bar in
windows speak not sure in SUSE speak!) when white and all the windows
controls disappeared. This now comes and goes as it feels when I reboot
the system but 90% of the time it is not there at restart.
Then various launchers I have created on the desktop and task bar have
all disappeared.
Then I tried to re-install Adobe Acrobat (It had disappeared from my
system I checked from the command line before doing a re-install)
Terminal says it has installed BUT it is nowhere to be found on the
machine! And cannot be launched from the command line!
When I tried to reinstall just to see if the install had failed
Terminal tells me it is already installed.
Any ideas? or am I in for a complete re-install of the OS?

Hi
If you create a test user on your system and login, is it the same?
Have you modified your path or environment variables?

Hi Malcolm,
I think I may have worked out what had gone wrong. See if this makes
sence.
1. created a test user as you suggested.
2. No problems with launchers or title bar after two reboots.
3. tried to install Adobe Acrobat reader in as test user system said it
was already installed
4. Used YaST to uninstall Adobe Acrobat
5. Reinstalled Adobe Acrobat under Test User, all worked perfectly.
6. changed back to my normal user.
7. Unistalled Adobe Acrobat rebooted
8. re Installed Acrobat and this time it appeared in new apps
9. I have recreated all my launchers and after three reboots all is
stable and no title bar problems.
I think I may have screwed up the original install of Adobe Acrobat
Reader. I noticed that when I reinstalled that whilst the install was
going on nothing much seemed to be happening but when it is fully
installed terminal showed the path to the directory and I think I quit
before that appeared when I tried it yesterday.

did you really have to reboot??? Linux is noit windows, all should
work without rebbo (reboot is only necessary to update kernel)

if with YaST, there nor "install as a user", all installs are system
wide and made as root (YaST asks for root password).
You *can* install as a user with some archives that can be copied in
the user directory without yast (usually not rpm's)
and how do you "reboot"? it have to be done cleanly (for example right
clic on the desktop, logout, reboot menu)
sometime YaST may be very long to act and seem crashed, but is not. At
such (or similar) time, a hard reboot (switch off) may disturb your system
