| ATI Driver and X1650 PRO AGP Card |

After a lot of gymnastics, have finally succeeded in getting the ATI
driver working with my X1650 PRO AGP card installed in Gigabyte
GA-K8NSNXP-939 MB with an nVIDIA NForce3 Ultra chipset. The processor
is an AMD Athlon FX-55 processor. Am posting so that others can avoid
the same exercise. It turns out that all that is required is to set
the AGP aperture to 256MB in BIOS. One of the rabbit trails that I
went down was to build the nVIDIA agp driver, but it apparently is not
needed and I no longer load it.
I installed the driver, version 8.3 using the procedure at the Linux
and Open Source Blog, AMD/ATI drivers installation. Used sax2 to
configure xorg.conf rather than aticonfig. I am using an old monitor,
a NEC Multisync 3V and aticonfig did not set up the screen correctly.
Note, however, that sax does not recognize the ATI card, and reports
the card as VESA framebuffer graphics, and says it cannot enable
activation of 3D subsystem.
I am getting about 4000 fps running glxgears and about 1300 fps with
fgl_glxgears.
