Yes. But they claim it is based on 'usability' studies conducted on
new users, where they get these folks I have no idea. I agree though the
default configuration for power users is %$#@. Make sure you try out the
plasmoid that creates the traditional win9x version of the start menu.
That goes a long way for me in increasing usability. You can use Konqueror
like always as a file manager.
I think there is an icon visible when you are using the Start Menu plasmoid
instead of Kickoff. It's also possible to add icons to the toolbar at the
bottom, but it escapes me at present on how to do that and for some reason
vmware has taken a dive this morning so I can't call it up to remember.

If you hate the panel get rid of it altogether. There is power in KDE4 I
just hope they expose more of it and not hide it like GNOME does. What
they need is a tweak that you can set all of KDE to 'power mode' instead of
lamer clueless mode.

I hadn't thought about removing the panel completely. I always set mine
to autohide anyway. The menu as a desktop icon makes sense when you
think about it.

I need to see if I can get a workable configuration as soon as I get time
and cool down a bit.

There are videos of the usability testing linked from opensuse.org.
The give the subject a task to perform, but all they have to work with is
the SLED menu.

They also have then perform very generic tasks, with only the default SLED
apps as available options.

If you have ever used any computer platform before you would become very
confused by the process.

I don't see how that process can produce any real-world results.
