No GUI after latest auto-updates

No GUI after latest auto-updates
Sun, 03 Feb 2008 03:56:01 GMT
Hello all,
I have a 10.3 KDE install that was working fine. I hadn't
turned it on for a couple of weeks and when I powered on today, the
SUSE updater told me there were a bunch of updates. I accepted the
updates and after the system rebooted, it appears that my network
interfaces are no longer being seen by the system, and I get left at a
command prompt. I can't get it to boot into the GUI now, and I need
help to spoon-feed info me to fix the problem caused by the latest
updates. Thanks to all in advance.

Hi
Sax2 from the CLI as root may work.

If you have an ATI or Nvidia card and followed one of the various "how
too's" to install you would probably have to re run that.

It may have been a kernel update or the xorg one, you don't say what
the updates were :)

Hi Malcolm,
I just wrote you a whole big reply, but when I tried
to send it I got a message telling me to refresh my browser and log
back in. I did that and of course now my reply is gone <sigh>. Another
wonderful day <grin>. My computer room system has a MSI 955X Platinum
motherboard with a Pentium D 940 cpu, 4GB of corsair DDR2 ram, a couple
of ASUS optical drives, a floppy drive, a 250GB sata300 hard drive, a
D-link WDA-1320 atheros based wireless card, and an ATI X1900XTX video
card. I am a newbie to Linux, and when I first installed the new 10.3
KDE system, Uwe, G, Darrell, and James helped me to resolve all the
problems and get it working perfectly. It was wonderful until the
opensuse updater messed up the system after I let it download and
install the seven security updates and the kernel update. I'll try what
you suggest, and see if running that SAX2 from the command will allow
the GUI to start again. I don't understand why the darn system is not
seeing my network interfaces anymore though <sigh>. It doesn't look
like the network drivers are being loaded now and the atheros card
isn't being identified during bootup. Thanks again, and I will let you
know if your suggestion works. Have a great day.

Hi Malcolm,
Well your suggestion worked just fine and dandy and the
system boots normally into the GUI. Unfortunately I have no access to
the internet though, and I am pretty well convinced that somehow the
updates wiped out my network interface info and drivers. When I go into
Yast and go into network devices, I see the two network devices listed
there, but I can go in and edit the wireless card info because after I
click configure, the rest of the boxes are grayed out. So I think Yast
has the card listed because it was previously installed, but it really
isn't seeing the card and that is why I can't do anything with the
configuration. I think I am going to have to run a long Cat5 cable down
to the downstairs router again, and then reload the drivers from the
MADWIFI website to get the D-link card to be operable again. I am
wondering if I should just do that right off the bat, or if I should
delete the old interfaces first and let them be re-added as new when
the system actually sees them again. The video is perfect again though,
and I didn't have to do anything else for that after I ran SAX2 from the
CLI. Thanks for your help Malcolm and have a great day.

Hi Robert
Glad sax2 worked for you :-) Yes I would normally delete the devices
and let yast rediscover them first, hopefully it will delete any old
configs. Else get that cable out ;-)
