James,
I agree with you here as far as you talk about the first impression :-)
Note that it is VERY early in the development progress of what you actually
*see*. The KDE guys themselves said that people will start getting more happy
around the time KDE 4.1 will be around later this year.
So far I noticed an impressive speed. Let's see how people make use of it. For
now, and if you ask me, for Opensuse 11, let's just stick with KDE3.
James, I'd like to end the thread here. Nothing about a good rant, but this
forum is for technical support, i.e. solving problems rather than just talking
about them. Thank you :-)

I was going to post a response to my own post this morninag anyway.
I've spent time trying to work through some of the issues I complained
about, and got a nearly usable configuration.
Sometimes you have to get these things out of your system.
It looks like 4.1 is still too early in process to do much in the way of
usability testing, and I'm not sure there is much point in doing too much
with. 4.0.1 if 4.1 is going to be different in enough ways to make it moot.
I plan to do a little more testing and report back to the kde forums and
leave at that for now.
I haven't really noticed speed differences, but my hardware was already
pretty fast, so it may not be as noticable on my system. I usually turn
the "eye candy" desktop stuff of, so the default configuration seems
slower than my kde3 config.
