You can do this also in KDE 4. Open the Add Widgets dialog
and close the Application Launcher Widget. Then Add the Alternative
Application Launcher which is the classic start bar menu....It's what I use.

Yes. There are a lot of 'usability' improvements that are essentially
catering to the lowest common denominator. Hopefully there will be a
power user option in future releases.

Probably some optimizations yet to be done as the backend wiring is not
yet complete.

I wouldn't go that far. LOL but I get your message.
I'd stick with KDE3 for the short term if I were you. It is simply
more mature and feature complete. When most of the apps are ported
