SUSE limited to sighted only?

SUSE limited to sighted only?
Sat, 08 Mar 2008 00:06:02 GMT
I installed a SUSE 9 that I received as an atttempt to learn a Linux
based system. The biggest problem is that it will not enlarge the
cursor and the text is always very tiny. Also I can not install my
usual browser (firefox and thunderbird) although I have downloaded
them. For the cursor problem I did go into peripheals and choose
large which may not be large enough. HOwever it will not install as
such. Is Linux for the sighted only>?

* chkpointe,

Suse 9 is totally outdated. Try Opensuse 10.3 and we'll see how we can help you.
Sounds like you are visually impaired: What kind of problem do you have,
exactly?

I have very limited vision, no peripheal and all text and icons must be
enlarged for me to find my way around. I got the 9.0 from a friend
who thought I might like to learn something new but everything seems so
small other than the desktop which we set to 800 x 600 to get the size
needed.

* chkpointe,

one more reason to try Opensuse 10.3: I doubt Suse 9 will run XGL. XGL (which
is, simplified, a desktop add-on for visual effects) has some nice features for
visually impaired users, like a magnifier, a desktop zoom, or the feature to dim
all windows except the active one.

You can download Opensuse 10.3 at www.opensuse.org.
Give it a try.

among many :-)

However...

I have several friends visually impaired (my Linux club is neighbour
to a visually impaired institute).

Most of them find better to put they face nearly touching the screen
to see.

I'm always scary with this to have them lose they last visual
capacity, but using any compputer with under 1024x768 window size is
pretty difficult.

The solution they use at home is a very large screen (I was said 24").
Nowaday 20" flat screens are affordables, TV screens HD ready allow
usually connecting a computer so you can have a comfortable screen
(but they are expensive)

hope this help. My friends are french and probably not so good in
english I could give them your mail :-(
