Hello, Starl8Gazer.

Installing and using LaTeX with SuSE 10.3 should be very easy --- I'm
using it myself.
1) Why not install from DVD? Just choose the Frontend Kile (very
recommendable) and all packages you need will be coming when
dependencies are checked by YaST2. Updating from the internet can be
done whenever you like.
2) When configuring Kile, chose LaTeX as your formatting program. With
the error you reported, it seems, your system wants to run pdfTeX
instead, maybe because TeX / pdfTex / PSTeX is all it knows.

After all: Which frontend do you use? You will surely not just type
"latex <filename>" at the konsole. I thought that method was out
of
fashion for decades.
