Photos bring OpenSUSE machine to a halt

Photos bring OpenSUSE machine to a halt
Mon, 31 Mar 2008 14:46:01 GMT
Hi All,
I connected a card reader to my OpenSUSE machine for the first time
this weekend. I downloaded 194 pictures to my HDD this took a while
about twice as long as my Win XP box.

But when I tried to run a slide show the machine just stopped
responding, so I rebooted and tried opening one photo at a time, this
process was so slow it has effectively ruled out ever using this
machine for photo work.

Is there something I need to configure, or are the in built tools just
that slow? I cannot believe Novell would let something this slow out of
the door so it must be me.

* nitrofan,

IMHO image display is indeed slower on Opensuse, compared to XP.
Check the system utilization when you do a slideshow (top, KDE System Guard
applet, whatever). Is the machine slow elsewhere?

Hi Uwe,
no the machine is actualy faster under OpenSUSE than it ever was under
XP Pro but NOT when it comes to photographs.

I will try checking the system when I am processing pictures and get
some screen dumps, I will try using the gimp to see if i will be able
to process pictures but given it would not run a slide show I fear
asking it to process images may be a step too far.

Things were going realy well but maybe image processing is the achilles
heel of Linux if it is Iwill have to keep a windows box to deal with my
photographs.

What size are the pictures you want to use for the slideshow, and what app are
you using for the slideshow?

Sorry for the delay in replying, The average size of each photo is
approx 3 Meg. I was using F-Spot.
