Install it according to my notes here and you'll be fine.
You'll hear also about using alternate methods but this is the
default way:
http://waxborg.servepics.com/English/Linux/SUSE.10.1/suse10.1.html
You can find similar instructions also elsewhere that work
perfectly well.
Then there are instructions to disable the original package
management. I hear they work fine, but have never tried.
I try to make and maintain my installations as much without extra
manipulation as possible.

I've been running with 10.1 ever since it was released back in May, and
so far I've yet to see any Java issues. So I'm not sure what you're
referring to there. As far as DVD playback goes, you can always install
xine or mplayer with the libdvdread package and you should get DVD
playback going just fine.

Thanks for the link and excellent detailed advice thereon. Just a
couple of questions from a newbie before I take the plunge.
1. I presently have 10.0 installed which I purchased from Novell.
(It has been mainly OK except for painfully slow internet performance
even when I have disabled IPv6.)
I have received a copy of 10.1 with Linux Format magazine. Is this
the same as I would get from Novell or are there going to be problems
because parts are disabled?.
2. The magazine suggests that upgrades rarely go smoothly and advise
doing a new installation. How do I protect my data from some
installer deciding to reformat my drive. Is this likely or am I being
paranoid? What is your advice please?
Regards,
Alastair.

I haven't seen that but it's probably the same if it's a DVD.
The least it could be OTOH could be the network installation
image. I doubt that, tho. Normally Linux Format has had complete
stuff.
Anyway, you end up with exactly the same version whichever 10.1
version you start with, depending on what you install and add to it.

SUSE installer won't format anything without your OK :)
The normal way would be to have /home on a separate partition in
the first place, and then do a fresh installation preserving and
using the old /home. This is done at the partitioning stage of
the installation by choosing "do not format"
In case you don't have a separate /home partition now, I suggest
you back up your /home directory first.
Then make a fresh install with a separate /home partition. SUSE
defaults to make one for you.
After the installation restore your /home and continue from that.
This makes your life easier in the future.
I made the instructions on my site some time ago. At that time
the installation took place from the originally released
installation disks.
The installation disks (images) at OpenSuse have been remastered
since. This doesn't happen often but now they've done it. This
means there are two versions of the installation disks out there.
If you download the installation disks now you get them readily
upgraded. So the installation goes with less upgrading.
Without knowing (I guess the cover disk isn't remastered) how old
the disk is you probably need to follow my instructions.
If you install from a remastered version there's no harm in the
instructions. A few steps will be skipped, like YaST won't
restart by itself several times :)
