| SUSE compile/build system information (for those that are interested) |

FYI
In a previous post in the novell.support.sles.configure-administer news
group I responded to a poster with the following bit of advice:
> "Spend time reading about the SUSE compile/build system. Understand
the consequences of what your about to do. Repeat compiling the latest
versions of the software using the SUSE build system."
Like it was obvious where to get the information and what to do. For
that I apologised, trying to get the links for the info was not
particularly obvious and required some perseverance.
There does not appear to be much info on the www.OpenSUSE.org website or
in the SUSE10 media provided PDF admin docs (e.g. "SUSE Linux
Reference"
or OpenSUSE10DVD/docu/en/startup_en.pdf).
Somewhat annoyed at this (and myself) after a bit of searching I have
found a collection of information on the SUSE Build system. For the
benefit of the poster, myself and others on the mailing list who want to
learn the about the SUSE build system - check out the following:
A good place to start is chapter "5.3 RPM — the Package Manager" in
"SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 Administration and Installation". I
would download the zip file from
"http://www.novell.com/documentation/suse.html" as for some silly
reason
the PDF on its own is approx 70MB (compared to 7.5MB on the SLES9 media).
Next port of call is "Novell Cool Solutions: Feature: Beginner's Guide
to Using Novell SUSE Linux's Build Utility"
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/11793.html
Followed by "Building Packages for Novell's Linux Products
From DeveloperNet by Cory Aitchison"
http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Building_Packages_for_Novell%27s_Linu
x_Products
Which can all be found in one way or another in "Novell Developer Wiki
Category:Enterprise Linux Management"
http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Enterprise_Linux_Management
Hope you find it useful.
Regards
