| CUPS stop printer at the slightest problem |

Hi all.
I have the following setup:
- a HP laserjet printer, with it's NIC
- a number of SUSE 10.0 and Windows machines
Each of ma my machines prints directly to the printer, mostly because there
isn't a point (for my usage) to defining a print server.
My problem: if I print when the printer isn't available, CUPS 'stops' it.
Fine by me, but when the printer becomes available again, CUPS won't resume
work. Worse, I have to go to the localhost:631 page to restart the printer,
or the queued jobs will just sit there.
This happens:
- when the printer's switched off (not sure, need to test)
- during a paper jam
- when the paper tray's empty
- when the toner needs replacing
- when another computer is printing to it
I've had the same issue with my previous laser, but that was connected to
the centronics port of my router, and I figured that the box's behaviour was
the problem.
This can't be intentional, right? I mean, imagine a print server with many
queues on it, where the manager of that system has to manually restart
printers each time someone opens a paper tray...
At least, it should be possible to restart/retry the interrupted job, from
the KDE printer queue, as a simple user.
Is there some setting to enable a retry period of some kind ?

Same thing happens with my HP PSC 1350 (USB). If you use KDE, you can use
kprinter or the "Print System" applet and restart it. You will need
to
supply the root password though.
I hope this gets fixed as well. I'm sure there is a way to setup a udev rule
to run a script to reactivate the printer in CUPS when the printer is
connected. I haven't looked into this much myself as this happens to me
usually when I _really_ need the printer and I forget about it when I don't
need it :).

It seems more recent version have options to restart, or at least try.
But haven't looked into it myself.
Well, they'll figure it out... one day.

Hi Rikishi,
I have the same problem ith an HP 6540 printer. I have upgraded the
hplip to the latest version, without success. The issue doesn't occur
with another printer (Brother MFC 210c), also attached to suse 10.3,
and there were no problems under suse 10.2.
While it is annoying, I start the printer from the KDE control center
as root.
If you have solved it, I would appreciate knowing.
