| No Samsung mfp ports on opensuse 10.3 |
 |

Hi,
I'm using a Samsung SCX-4200 MFP device (printer&scanner) which used to
work great with opensuse 10.2 (and other dist's).
Unfortunately, on opensuse 10.3 the (latest) Samsung driver
20070720152943906_UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz fails to install properly,
in particular Samsung's mfp-ports obviously cannot be generated.
Through cups (localhost:631) the printer can eventually be installed
manually but the scanner remains unknown, although sane-find-scanner
does detect the device correctlyr:
'found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung], product=0x341b [SCX-4200
Series]) at libusb:007:003'
On other partitions on the very same HW (pretty recent, MSI P35 board),
however, the very same driver installs perfectly both under opensuse
10.2 and under ubuntu 7.10, so I can't but conclude that the problem
with my SCX-4200 is a genuine opensuse 10.3 only 'goodie', any ideas how
to make the driver (and Samsung's mfp ports) install?
Thanks in advance for help and tips

Samsung Unified Driver works in OpenSuse 10.3 mounting usbfs. This
driver allows to use the scanner, but see 'Samsung SCX-4200 on Debian -
JacoboTarrioOrg' (http://jacobo.tarrio.org/Samsung_SCX-4200_on_Debian)
for scanning as normal user. The best print result can be obtained with
'''foo2qpdl''' driver. ('foo2qpdl: a linux printer driver for QPDL
protocol' (http://foo2qpdl.rkkda.com)).

David,
thanks a lot, yes, indeed mounting usbfs via
'mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb'
solved my SCX-4200 scan problem and made
20070720152943906_UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz (latest Samsung driver)
also support the scan function (NOT 'mount -t usbdevfs ...' as
recommended on http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x173.html but 'mount
-t usbfs ...')
As to your hint

I did not encounter any problems on Ubuntu 7.10 with the
20070720152943906_UnifiedLinuxDriver.tar.gz driver: Apparently this
driver has somehow solved the previous 'missing mfpport.ko' problem:
although I could not detect any mfpport.ko module on Ubuntu 7.10 the
driver installs and works perfectly well (both print and scan) from the
very beginning.
Once more thanks much for your hint to usbfs!
=>openSUSE/Novell support experts: Any explanation why this is
apparently required on 10.3 even if all other USB devices like external
harddisks, card-reader, digicams etc seem to work ok w/o explicitly
mounting usbfs ???

Hi, Nick
I'm not a openSUSE expert, but I think the problem is in the new udev
rules about the old usb_drive class management... Kernel 2.6.22 is
quite different about this topic...
