I just had the same issue. No firewall. Added community repostories
manuelle and now update works. But the online registration still does
not work.
In the messages logs there is a error about rug/zmd not found.

There is no need for registration. Just adding the update server will
get you the online updates.

I've actually had the online update repository added manually and
working, it's as mentioned above just the registration that doesn't
work.
My impression was you did the registration to make sure you got all
relevant drivers for your hardware?

Nope. you just give Novell some stats, including details about your hardware.
There's no real benefit for you (there is, of course, one for the community).
