A little history. Last year for Christmas my children bought openSUSE
10.2 for me. So, I was duel booting Win98/SuSe10.2 & my wife was
running WinXP. I was able to get SAMBA running to share files between
my SuSe10.2 and my wifes XP. We could already exchange files between
our windows 98 & XP. My computer died, so I quickly replaced it with
another Win98 box.
before I got around to reinstalling SUSE on my computer we got hijacked
and our ISP shut us down because they identified our IP address as a
“zombie”. Their recommendation was hire someone to fix it or to just
format the HD's & start over. Either way, I would get it fixed or they
would deny us internet access. I formated and partitioned both our
computers to leave space to install openSUSE on both boxes and did so
as soon as I got our 98 & XP back in place.
And, yes I now have the router firewall on and we are changing what we
accept through our email & web downloads.
My wife now has XP/SuSe10.3 and I have 98/SuSe10.3. My plan is to
migrate to SuSe and simply eliminate Microsoft altogether.
I use a D-link router to connect our computers together and to the
Internet. Recently discovered that the D-link router is set up for VPN
using IP addresses.
All the different options available in openSuSe for networking,
security, and moving files, have gotten a little overwhelming. All I
really know is that I can get Samba to share files between SuSe &
WinXP, and I can get the printer to work anywhere with KDE/CUPS
I am asking, what would Your software recommendations be for
networking 2-4 openSuSe computers together in a “Home” “Small Business”
network using a D-Link router to access the outside???
I have NO need what-so-ever to access these computers when I am away
form home. Actually, when we are away they are turned off.
Occasionally, other family members when visiting will go on line and
are the only people to access our computers other than my wife and I,
so I am not paranoid about major firewall and passwords on this side of
the D-Link router.
Some files I am hoping to update and be able to change from either
computers, like our calender and check book register.
Your suggestions will probably help someone besides me decide where to
invest their time getting set up at home.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
Ken

Ken,
since you already configured Opensuse to share files with Windows through Samba,
why not use it for connections between two or more Opensuse boxes? Should be
pretty straight forward.
Sounds like you already got the internet connection to work, so that's fine.
I'd disable the VPN on the router if you don't need it.

Why use Samba when he isn't using windows? What about NFS? I had heard
there were some security problems with NFS, but I don't know if that is
still true.
Actually, this was the same question I had, as I have eliminated
Windows completely, except for guest virtual machines which I'm not
worried about networking.
Will installing/configuring one of my desktops to be an NFS server,
will I see a big performance decrease? What are my options other than
NFS and Samba.

Why not Samba?
NFS isn't really easy to configure and not overly flexible. Also he doesn't want
a dedicated server, just a bunch of workstations.

I don't think performance would decrease, no, but you'd have to run this one
machine permamently.
Other options, sure. You could rsync folders between machines or use Unison, you
could use FTP, WebDAV, iFolder, you could install an OES and use NCP, with the
Novell client on every client machine.
But I still think he wants Samba, really. The fact that Windows understands the
protocol doesn't mean it is evil :-)

the OP said:
"Some files I am hoping to update and be able to change from either

fankly, this question was so well hidden in not necessary stuff I
missed it :-)
for such use, samba is of no interest, because samba is usefull for
browsing an other computer. Here the use mean mounting some part of
the target computer (and of course it must be on a the time).
Of course it's possible with cifs or smbmount, but under linux it's
better fitted to use nfs
however, the OP should be warned than editing a same file from several
computers is not without drawnacks, for example some apps don't like
this (openoffice is known for that), and this makes backup tricky,
because many applications keep a local file backup and this could
trigger removing of chages made by others... anyway the shared files
need a shared folder
