Cannot get onto the Internet

Cannot get onto the Internet
Tue, 04 Mar 2008 19:36:03 GMT
Some time ago I purchased Suse Linux 10.0 with the intention of using it
instead of Windows. I installed it but have never managed to get on the
internet with it. I have tried many, many times with a multitude of
settings and have loaded several modules many of which are probably are
not needed. The computer is connected to the Netgear Router via an
Ethernet cable and I have no trouble getting on the Internet via
Windows XP.

I tried the test in the manual and when I “ping (host name) Tiscali, I
get a repeated message saying “64 bytes from Tiscali.co.uk (127.0.0.2)
icmp_seq, etc. This seems to be good but nothing else works.

The “Network Services” I have loaded include: DHCP Server, DNS Server,
DNS & Hostnames, HTTP Server, Hostnames, Kerberos Client, LDAP Client,
Mail Transfer Agent, NFS Server and Client, NIS Server and Client,
Network Services (xinetd), Proxy, Remote Administration, Routing, Samba
Server and Client and TFTP Server. I realise that I will need to remove
some of these but which?

Although I am reasonably up with computers, (I was around when DOS was
the only system) but the terminology used in this aspect of computing
is strange to me. Windows is more idiot proofed than Linux.

Can you ping or resolve any other web addresses on the internet,

Thank you for your reply.

No I cannot get a success to any of the pings. I am beginning to think
that the the computer is not seeing the router. Any ideas?

Regards, Richard

In the Ethernet configuration, did you set the interface to use DHCP?

In the hostname and nameserver page, my router wants the gateway IP entered.
The router is configured to find the ISP's DNS server automatically, which
will enable me to enter a domain name and have it translated. Is that set
up? You could try to ping an IP number. If that works the problem is in
DNS.

You do not need DNS server on your machine, unless you want it to be a
server.
