I suppose you don't use dhcp? (automatic adress)
in this case one have to manually (in YaST) configure gateway and DNS
(network/services)
in previous versions, the menus for this where directly in network
card setup
if you *use* dhcp, the dhcp server may not be configured correctly or
simply not to provide dns values, add them like above

ab25,
not enough information. Define "broadband" please, and how do you want
to connect to it?
Actually IMHO it isn't worth the effort, just buy a cheap router and connect it
to your DSL modem or your cable modem, then the network setup should work with
the defaults.

automatically detect the ethernet card as etho0 by DHCP...but still I

ab25,
when you connect with XP, which IP address does it get? I assume it is an
192.... address. That's what your opensuse box should receive as well. Use the
Networkmanager applet to check the address.
It may be possible that the card doesn't receive an address from the router.
You'll then see it having an address starting with 169...
You could then try using a fixed address from the address range of the net your
router/DHCP server maintains. Use the router's IP address as the default gateway
and as the DNS server.
